The project

The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) is a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping project. The ACLED team conducts analysis to describe, explore, and test conflict scenarios and makes both data and analysis open for free use by the public. ACLED material is regularly used to inform journalism, academic research, and public discourse on conflict, and to support the work of practitioners and policymakers. ACLED is the highest quality and most widely used real-time data and analysis source on political violence and protest around the world.

The role

ACLED is recruiting a Regional Specialist to support region-specific work on the Africa region. The Regional Specialist will be responsible for coordinating analytical outputs across the region, providing support to the relevant regional desk(s) and identifying and assisting Research Managers and Researchers to engage in analysis. The Regional Specialist produce original analysis on political and security developments across the region, working in close collaboration with the Analysis team.

Additionally, the Regional Specialist will provide support around methodology for regional contexts, working in close context with both relevant Research Manager(s) and the Methodology team. This will include supporting research desk(s) on methodology issues and drafting methodology documents, sourcing supplementation, as well as supporting the Communications team with relevant media requests. This position reports to the Associate Analysis Manager, while working across various research teams.

The position is fully remote and can be done from any location with reliable internet service. The positions is best-suited for ACLED Coordinators, Research Managers, Associate Research Managers, or Senior Researchers with expert knowledge of the larger region.

Specific roles and responsibilities

(a) Contribute to regional analysis products

  • Work in close partnership with respective Research Manager(s), Communications team, and Analysis team
  • Contribute to region-specific analysis products, such as reports, infographics, fact sheets, press releases, etc.
  • Provide in-depth writing support for Researchers, developing new pieces as necessary and supporting development of research products every step of the way
  • Provide commentary to media on request

(b) Contribute to thematic analysis products

  • Provide region-specific contributions to larger reports as required

(c) Provide regional expertise, including but not limited to:

  • Contribution to oversight of regional coverage (i.e. do ACLED trends reflect local realities)
  • Sources of information (e.g. identifying new sources to be included, ensuring current sources are properly covered, etc.) Access to local sources/networks is a plus
  • Providing background on actors and classifying them
  • Identifying and liaising new partnerships, especially with local conflict observatories, in collaboration with the respective ACLED Research Manager(s)
  • Work in close partnership with respective Research Manager(s) and methodology team on solving methodological issues and drafting methodology documents

(d) Engagement with donors and users

  • Answer questions that may arise about the region of focus, both content-related and those related to ACLED methodology

Candidates should have familiarity with ACLED and preferably have experience translating complex analysis for users.

Skills and competencies:

  • Expertise in conflict dynamics across the Africa region or in one or more areas across the region (essential);
  • Fluency in English (essential);
  • Fluency in one or more key regional language(s), e.g., Arabic, French, Portuguese or else (essential);
  • Strong writing and editing skills;
  • Strong critical thinking and analysis skills;
  • Familiarity with Tableau data analysis and visualization software (essential);
  • Experience with media engagement and externally representing an organization (preferred);
  • Familiarity with local organizations working to report and document human rights violations and/or collect conflict data
  • Experience working to deadlines with limited supervision;
  • Experience managing small teams and mentoring junior staff (essential);
  • A high level of attention to detail and the ability to receive and incorporate feedback;
  • Access to a computer, a reliable internet connection, email, and the Microsoft Office Suite.
